Sustainable Environment with Green Building Concept

Sky rocketing developments, higher buildings, bigger malls, and thousands of pounds of CO2 emissions, we have gone blind in search of development and have brought our mother earth on the verge of critical condition. Numerous researches and studies have shown that we need to plant more trees, but the extent up to which we have caused destruction is so much that merely “Planting trees” is not enough at all. That means we need a complete green solution for our mother. This green solution is known as “Green Building Concept” which refers to the incorporation of resource efficient processes and environment friendly ideas at every single step of construction. From end to end, i.e. from site selection to construction, operations to renovation, maintenance to demolition the basic idea is to minimize the possible impact on the environment.

The 2 main focal points of Green Building Concepts are:

1. Efficient plans for energy, water and material usage
2. Reducing harmful impact on health and environment

History of Green Building Concepts:

It was in 1970s when cost of fuels were sky rocketing and people suddenly became aware of the Green Building concepts. The architects and builders started finding ways to reduce the overall cost of building as well as integrating it with eco friendly ideas. Soon the process of fuel came back to normal which freezed the movement to a low. However, again in 1990s the movement got a kick start, this time for noble reason of sustainability. Building programs were run and significant changes in building patterns were implemented.

Elements of Green Building Concepts

Sustainable site:

The idea focuses on finding location that are well connected via public transport so as to cut down energy and fuel consumption. It also helps to save money. Rehabilitation of sites that are damaged by contamination of environment is better and cheaper than other options.

Material and Resources:

Highly recyclable materials are used, low gassing and air emitting equipments are adapted and material that is sustainable, durable, reused it preferred to save money and energy.
The rapidly renewable resources like bamboo flooring, strawboards etc are popular and used to reduce raw material depletion which are finite.
The locally available material is used as it saves transportation cost and time as well.

Water Efficient and Environment conservation:

Water efficient and low flow equipments are used in home, kitchens and bathroom.
Waste management technologies like dual flushing, self closing nozzles must be used.
Micro irrigation is preferred over high pressure sprays.
Reuse, recycle and treatment of waste water remain a center of concern and well adopted.
Rain water harvesting systems help to achieve maximum possible rain water utilization.
Treated waste water can be recycled by natural plants like duckweed etc. which can then be reused for usual purpose like irrigation and industrial usage.
Adopting these simple steps is not very cumbersome or difficult but can make crucial and scalable impact on mother Earth.
